I’ve struggled to photograph this chess/checkers stand since I arrived in Chicago. I’ve passed by this stand several times and each time I think, “To take a picture or not to take a picture?” Every picture I had taken felt as if it had been taken before, but I wanted to do this unique stand justice.

This man sets up shop almost everyday with his chess and checkers boards ready for complete strangers to go head to head, for a low-low fee, of course! He props up his windmills and boombox whether it’s 40 or 90 degrees out. When you see the people playing on this crazy busy street that is Michigan Avenue, they’re in their own world. They don’t notice me or anyone else photographing them. I think I was finally able to portray what it must feel like to play. Checkmate.
